June 8, 2025 Storm Recap: Hail and Wind Damage Across Abilene & Big Country

Severe storms swept across the Abilene area and surrounding communities on the evening of Sunday, June 8, 2025, leaving behind a trail of hail damage, downed trees, and roof destruction.

Widespread Hail Impact

Radar data and reports show hail ranging from 1" to 2.5" in diameter, with the most intense hail core hitting areas just southwest of central Abilene, where hail reached 2.5 inches in size. Other areas such as:

  • Wylie reported 1.25" hail

  • Jim Ned area (near Tuscola) saw hail sizes up to 2"

  • Merkel and northwest Abilene had widespread 1" hail

These hail sizes are large enough to damage asphalt shingles, metal roofs, siding, windows, and vehicles.

High Winds Accompany Hail

Localized wind gusts caused additional destruction. A major wind concentration was reported northeast of Abilene, where 61 mph gusts damaged trees, fences, and buildings.

The KTXS news station itself sustained severe storm damage, a reminder of how powerful these systems were. Portions of north Abilene saw tree limbs down and roofing materials torn off homes.
