April 22, 2025 Storm Update: Hail and Wind Impact Across Abilene and the Big Country

On the evening of April 22, 2025, a significant weather event swept through Abilene and surrounding areas, bringing strong winds and pockets of damaging hail. This storm was part of a larger system that developed rapidly and affected much of West Texas, including Taylor County.

Areas Affected by the Storm

Radar data shows that the heaviest impact occurred in and around Abilene, particularly near Loop 322, Abilene Regional Airport, and along TX-36. The storm's intensity was highest in the southeastern portions of the city, with estimated radar-indicated hail sizes potentially exceeding 1 inch in diameter in some spots.

Other impacted areas include:

  • Dyess Air Force Base (western Abilene)

  • Tye and surrounding rural zones along US 277

  • Communities east of Abilene, along TX-351 and US 83/84, including areas stretching toward Potosi and Eula

The radar image reveals storm energy values (indicated by color gradients) suggesting substantial updrafts, typically associated with hail-producing storms.

What This Means for Your Roof

If you live in the affected areas, your roof may have experienced:

  • Hail impact damage (dents, bruised shingles, cracked tiles)

  • Wind-lifted or missing shingles

  • Damage to flashing or other roof components

Even if the damage isn’t immediately visible from the ground, hidden issues can lead to water leaks and long-term structural concerns.
