Storm Recap: Wind, Rain, and Hail Across the Big Country This Week

What Happened This Week in West Texas

This past week brought a mix of wind, rain, and hail across the Big Country. While not a major severe weather outbreak, several communities experienced conditions strong enough to potentially cause roof damage.

According to reports from the National Weather Service, wind gusts reached up to 65 mph near Woodson in Throckmorton County. In addition to strong winds, multiple areas reported hail ranging from quarter-size (1.0”) up to golf ball size (1.75”).

Reported Conditions by Area

  • Woodson (Throckmorton County):

    • Wind gusts up to 65 mph

    • Hail up to 1.75” (golf ball size)

  • Breckenridge (Stephens County):

    • Multiple reports of hail between 1.25”–1.75”

  • Miles (Runnels County):

    • Hail up to 1.75”

  • Brownwood (Brown County):

    • Hail around 1.0” (quarter size)

Even in areas where hail was smaller or less consistent, strong wind and heavy rain can still cause issues—especially for aging or already compromised roofs.

What This Means for Your Roof

Storms like this often don’t look severe at first glance, but they can still lead to:

  • Lifted or missing shingles from high winds

  • Granule loss from hail impact

  • Soft spots or bruising on shingles

  • Minor leaks that may not show up right away

The tricky part is that damage isn’t always visible from the ground, and small issues can turn into expensive repairs if left unchecked.

When Should You Get Your Roof Checked?

You should consider a roof inspection if:

  • You experienced hail in your area

  • You noticed strong wind during the storm

  • Your roof is over 5–7 years old

  • You’re seeing signs like debris, shingles in the yard, or water spots inside

Even if everything looks fine, a quick inspection can give you peace of mind.
