Project Spotlight: First Presbyterian Church of Baird, Texas
Preserving a Historic Church with a Modern Roofing Solution
Bunton Roofing Company recently completed a specialized commercial roofing project for First Presbyterian Church of Baird, a historic landmark that has served the Baird community for well over a century.
Founded in 1885, First Presbyterian Church of Baird constructed its current church building between 1910 and 1912. In recognition of its historical significance, the building was placed on the Texas Historical Commission (THC) Registry in 1969. Projects like this require extra care, experience, and respect for the structure’s history—something our team takes seriously.
The Challenge: Roofing a Historic Church Belfry
The church’s belfry roof needed a durable, watertight system that would improve drainage and long-term performance while remaining appropriate for a historic structure. Belfry roofs are especially vulnerable due to elevation, exposure to wind, and limited access.
Our goal was to:
Improve drainage to prevent future water intrusion
Protect the structure below
Use a modern commercial roofing system built to last
Complete the work without compromising the historic integrity of the building
Scope of Work: Tapered TPO Roofing System for Belfry
Bunton Roofing installed a new tapered TPO roofing system designed specifically for positive drainage and long-term durability.
Work Completed
1. Roof Surface Preparation
Cleaned the existing roof surface to ensure proper adhesion and fastening of new materials.
2. Tapered Insulation Installation
Mechanically fastened tapered insulation boards to create positive drainage and eliminate ponding water.
3. TPO Roof Membrane Installation
Installed a 60 mil TPO roof membrane using a combination of fasteners and TPO adhesive for a secure, weather-resistant system.
4. Metal Drip Edge Installation
Installed new metal drip edge around the entire perimeter of the belfry roof to control water runoff and protect roof edges.
5. Custom Belfry Flashing
Fabricated and installed custom metal flashing around the perimeter of the fiberglass belfry to ensure a watertight seal.
6. TPO Walk Pad Installation
Installed a TPO walk pad from the roof hatch to the belfry opening to protect the roof membrane from foot traffic during maintenance.
7. Roof Hatch Flashing
Properly flashed around the roof hatch and raised the hatch as needed to meet roofing best practices.
8. Warranty
Provided Bunton Roofing Company’s standard 5-year warranty for added peace of mind.
Why TPO Roofing Was the Right Choice
TPO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin) roofing is a popular choice for churches and commercial buildings because it offers:
Excellent weather resistance
Strong seams and long-term durability
Improved energy efficiency
Compatibility with tapered insulation systems
For a structure like a church belfry—where access is limited and reliability is critical—TPO provides dependable protection for decades to come.
Experience Matters with Historic Church Roofing
Working on historic buildings requires more than technical skill—it requires respect for the structure and an understanding of how modern roofing systems can be integrated without compromising character or integrity.
